Scripture 1st Peter 1: 3-9 What Difference Does it Make
This morning our scripture was from 1 Peter 1:3-9 and it tells of the treasure hidden away in heaven for each believer and also of the trials and woes we must each experience down here on earth, but I want to concentrate on what Solomon said in Ecclesiastes 4: 4 And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. Church nothing we do in this life can compare in significance in any way with our true purpose on this planet earth. Not being President or Kremlin or Queen, not founding Microsoft, or Apple, not having the last name of Buffet or Trump, for truly only what we do for Christ will last. I am not saying what we do in this life doesn’t matter, it matters, but none of it will last. The title of the sermon is What Difference Does it Make? And it is actually based on the song,by the same title, You may build great cathedrals large or small, you can build skyscrapers grand and tall, but only what you do for Christ will last. You may seek earthly power and fame, the world might be impressed by your great name, soon the glories of this life will all be past, but only what you do for Christ will last. Remember only what You do for Christ will last. Only what you do for Him will be counted at the end only what you do for Christ will last. The problem with this world and the people of this world is that no matter what you do for man or even for mankind, you will eventually be forgotten. Don’t believe me? Heart transplants, pretty important, right, think about it with this knowledge all kinds of transplants can be performed, at some point we probably will trade in body parts like we trade in cars, but who performed the first heat transplant? Telephone pretty important invention, right, no telephone, no cell phone, no computer, no text, now you see how important invention was, but who invented it? These were all life changing events, things that were the talk of the whole world at that time and yet today, we barely even recognize their names. The only Presidents names we remember are either recent or we those we get a day off or a sale in their honor, but even that is going away, now we have presidents day to honor them all. Who under 40 can tell you who Roosevelt was, or Hoover or Truman, all Presidents at important times in our countries history, all did great things, but who really remembers, who really even cares anymore. No matter what you do for people, no matter how life changing it may be, people forget you and your name, in time. Church one huge difference between man and God, God never forgets, from the number of hairs on your head, to every word before you ever speak it, God knows all about you. It’s not only the good things God remembers He also remembers our unrepented sins. Now through the blood of Jesus and repentance God throws our sins in the sea of forgetfulness, but without that forgiveness, we perish, we rot in the grave, we give up what would have been our place in eternity, why? Go back to Ecclesiastes 4, vanity of vanities all is vanity. Back before the Sears Tower, when men first started this race to build the worlds tallest building, there were two skyscrapers being built in NY and each one wanted to be the tallest, so to win one architect hid the top of his building and then after his competition unveiled their building as the tallest then this other millionaire put the hidden topper on his building and he won. But what did he win, at the time his name was on every lip and I can’t even remember their names, but the whole thing was about vanity, they thought by this achievement that they would be remembered but we have had larger buildings built all over the world, we no longer have that record, all the deviousness and crooked dealing that were done to win that title and no one even remembers. Do good works, fight for justice, fight against injustice, fight to feed the poor, all of these are honorable things, get good jobs and provide for your families, enjoy life, just know no matter what you do, how great your name maybe only what you do for God will last. Feed and clothe the poor but know this Jesus said you will always have the poor. We still do our best, why? Jesus told us to feed the hungry, to clothe the naked, to visit the sick and the prisoners, because Jesus told us to do it, this will last for we do it not for them we do it because Jesus told us to and therefore it will last. In Matthew. In Matthew 6 we read 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Did you see the young black man won almost ½ million dollars 11/30/15 and was killed in a home invasion last week. This young man loved that money more than his life, they say he begged not to be killed in front of his girlfriend and children, told them they could have his atm card threw his pants to the gunman but when they looked his wallet wasn’t there, so they killed him right there. So sad, another black family left without a father. Familiy members kill each other over money. The woman whose son killed several people while driving drunk and the mom took him and ran for Mexico, now mom is in jail here and son is in jail in Mexico, they said he was too spoiled to know right from wrong, yeah right, I bet that went over real well in Mexican prison. Don’t let trouble enter your life, most would not be like Job, most blame God for all trouble enter your life, most would not be like Job, most blame God for all their troubles mad at God because you got trouble. Here’s a little truth for you. God spared not His own Son His own self to trouble, to being lied on, being talked about, spat on, whipped and beaten, being stripped and shamed, suffered the lowest of deaths one reserved for murderers, by hanging and dying on a tree, why do you think you are to good or should somehow be spared when He spared not Himself? Think about it people before you go to God with your perfect reasoning’s why things should go the way you think is best. What difference does it make, what difference did it make to them Jesus healed them, fed them came to die for them the long promised Messiah, they still killed Him. What difference did it make to them that He met all the requirements of being the Messiah so long since waited for, what difference did it make they still killed Him. So if Jesus mattered not to them, why do we think we should matter to the world. Stop worrying about this life, what will be will be, what God declares is what will be, so what difference does it make? Not much in this world but it matter greatly in the next. You may not remember the names of some of the great men of this age, but thousands of years later, you know the name of King David, of Solomon, of Moses, of Paul and Matthew and Mark and Luke and John, only what you do for God will last. Your life matters, you matter not to this world but to God. We used to say we were sending up timber for our heavenly homes, I don’t know if that’s true, but I tell you this, I would rather have a small name in heaven than a great name on earth. What difference does it make, Psalm 84: 10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. What difference does it make, when this old life is over will you be temporarily remembered on earth or have a place in eternity, that’s the difference it makes. Live your life as you are a soujourner in this land for this is not your home these bodies are not fit for heaven, your treasures mean nothing in heaven after all remember God made all this and taught us how to refine this gold and silver we love so much. Don’t we read that Heaven has streets of gold? Don’t we know there will be need for the sun Revelations 21:23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp. What difference does it make, life and death, Matthew 25 33 He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. 34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, it matters to the King of Glory so it matters. Live right, live holy for it matters to God, to Jesus it matters how you live your life. The difference is Heaven or Hell.
