Scripture: Hebrews 2: 14-18 Sermon Title: Jesus Knows Part 2
This morning we will pick up where we left off, Jesus had been in the wilderness fasting for 40 days and 40 nights and now Jesus hungered. Jesus was not hungry for Jesus had been in communion with the Father and when you are in communion with the Father He will take care of your physical needs, we talked about Elijah being fed by ravens, about the jar of oil and the small amount of meal that lasted as long as there was famine in the land, and lastly of how God fed the children of Israel with angels’ food Manna from heaven. We got to that place in scripture because Jesus told Satan Man does not live by bread alone but by every word from God. We will pick up this morning with the second temptation. We want to concentrate on this scripture from Psalm 8 3 When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; 4 What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?5 For thou hast made him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.6 Thou madest him to have dominion over the works of thy hands; thou hast put all things under his feet: My supposition on last week was that Satan had no idea who he was dealing with when dealing with this Jesus. Here in this scripture even the angel’s seem confused with this Jesus. I need us to really get it. Satan is not worried about angels. We are told in Revelations 12: 7 And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels,8 And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven. 9 And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. You see here the devil has already pulled some angels, for here he fights with his angels against God’s angels led by Michael the arch angel. The devil is surely not worried about us, not on our own. This is what Satan is trying to do with Jesus, trying to get Him off by Hisself where he thinks he will have the upper hand. Notice Jesus goes with satan. Verse 5 Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple. Jesus offers no resistance for what can satan do to Jesus. Jesus is just playing along. Satan takes Jesus to the Holy city of Jerusalem and then takes Him to the top of the temple. Here if Jesus would just comply, what a great victory for Jesus not for God but for Jesus for vain glory. How many people lose everything chasing vain glory. Let’s look at Republican candidate Donald Trump, chasing the Presidency for vain glory, not for what he can do for others but that he can put on his resume, President of the United State of America. Satan is not chasing Donald, Donald is chasing satan. Satan already has Donald, but the ones chasing after Donald these are the ones satan wants to swallow whole. Great is the way that leadeth to destruction. Jesus knew satans trick was to have Jesus so caught up in chasing fame, in showing how great He was, that He put His own desires above God’s decree. Do you see how piteous this offer was? Jesus left heaven to come down here with one express duty, to heal the rift between God and man, to restore a right relationship between God and His creation, so why would God change. Again satan was not sure who he was dealing with. If it was an angel he had tempted angels before, prophets, he had led them astray, more may have been called that never answered the call because satan tempted them away. Look around at servants of God. How many ministers have fallen from grace, for power, money, sex? Satan has no problem with men and angels but satan has a problem with God. So when satan saw Jesus he just felt his time had come, he was going to destroy this so called Son of Man. Satan has an eye on all God’s people. He wants to fool us like he wanted to fool Jesus. You see Satan is the opposite of God, God humbles us to lift us up, conversely the devil lifts you up with false hopes false rewards, only to cast you down. So here satan is with Jesus lifting Him up telling Him, since God will protect you, why not jump, let the world see how great you are, let your name be published abroad, let me make you infamous. How many people fall for this, just look at the mass murderers each trying to make a better name. We have confused being famous with being infamous, we don’t care what they say about our name as long as they keep talking about us. This is all satan can offer you but God can make your name great, not for your sake but for His names sake. Satan wanted to get Jesus on the big stage in Jerusalem so all could see His great fall. I want you to take note of this Satan could not push Jesus off the pinnacle, no Jesus had to jump. Satan has limited power, he can suggest, he can show you he can entice you because of your wants and your flesh, but satan can not make you do anything, why because when God made us in His image He gave us the gift of free will, we can choose. Not only can we choose, just like Jesus we have scripture to show us the way. In verse 6 satn makes his offer 6 And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.7 Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. Look at how satan only quotes part of the scripture, this is why you need to read the Bible yourself so when the word is quoted incorrectly or partially you can know whats going on Psalm 91 9 Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; 10 There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.11 For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. Satan left out important parts to this scripture, giving the allusion it’s alright to test God, but you can’t misquote the word to the Word. John 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 The same was in the beginning with God.3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.4 In him was life; and the life was the light of men. Church Jesus knows for Jesus was from the beginning. Jesus was God’s best kept secret, even with the bread crumb path in the scriptures most did not recognize God when He came, verse 5 And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not. Without revelation from God we will lose our way, we will be fooled when false witnesses come, but if we study to show ourselves approved then whe satan comes we are ready as Jesus was ready. Jesus simply tells satan 7 Jesus said unto him, Itis written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.8 Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;9 And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.10 Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. 11 Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him. It’s written it’s word I am the Word so simply, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. When we choose to take satan on by ourselves we cause God to step aside and let us try remember we have free will to obey or disobey with a cost. The last temptation is so ludicrous to Jesus He simply says , Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. What was wrong with satan offereing Jesus what Jesus allready owns, it's like satan taking you to your house and telling you he will give you your house if you will serve him, ludicrous. Know who you are and who you serve and when the devil comes and he will come, you to can say get away devil, I belong to God I stand on His word I am called according to His purpose. You can stand up to satan with God on your side and say as Romans 8 15 For ye have notreceived the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. We are more than conquers, the devil can do us no harm as long as we stsy in fellowhip with our God. Let me make one more point, we get mad at people because they don’t understand this Jesus we follow, and yet even the angels are confused as to who this Jesus is, even satan was confused as to who this Jesus was, so maybe we should be patient and let God bring all things together in His time and in the mean time let us stand on the word, let us draw strength from the word, for Jesus is the Word and He knows all about it. He knows what it means to sorrow, he sorrowed Jesus even cried, but no scripture where laughed, He smilled but He never laughed, why because this salvation is serious business. Jesus understands betrayal, he knows pain from the lash, He knows what it’s like to be talked about to be lied on, to be spit on, to die and harrow hell, church Jesus knows all about it, whatever it is you can bring it all to Jesus, whatever you go through remember this Hebrews 4 14 Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. 15 For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.
