Scripture: Psalm 37: 1-11  Sermon Title: Fret Not

The scripture this morning was from Psalm 37 and it is all about not fearing man.  The title this Lenten Sunday is Fret Not.  So my question, what are you fretting about this morning, did you have a long night of prayer, did trouble cause you to toss and turn last night, have you cried lately?  Whatever may be causing you to worry, let me share this with you. Matthew 6 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life? Worry will not increase your years, but we know for a fact that worry will shorten your life.  So why worry, can you eat worry, can you put worry in the bank, can you spend worry or barter with it, can you worry your enemies to death?  Then what use is worry? Our Jesus told the Disciples in John 14 25 “All this I have spoken while still with you. 26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.  These are indeed scary times we live in, how scary is it that Donald Trump might be the Republican nominee for President, just ask the conservative republicans how scared they are right now? But what about your life right now what are you worrying about? Is it your child, what will become of your children? Is it some enemy that is coming against you, is it hunger or poverty, is it standing up to some powerful foe, is it you just don’t feel able of meeting all the challenges in your life, is it going against the grain against all odds, or is it the ultimate fear the fear of death? Whatever you are fretting or worrying about, I bring good news, glad tidings to the whole world, Jesus has come from heaven and broke every stronghold, there is nothing left to fear. I want to both encourage and be encouraged by the word of God. My last few sermons were entitled Jesus Knows I and II, and it ties in well with this question about fretting. God knows what we fret about, I guarantee you will never bring something before God that He has not dealt with before, nothing you are going through is new to God. God knows children are a handful, are we not God’s children and are we not a handful, for other people but not for God. Hagar can tell you a little bit about worrying about a child. Genesis 21 16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow shot: for she said, Let me not see the death of the child. And she sat over against him, and lift up her voice, and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him in thine hand; for I will make him a great nation. Hagar like so many of us mothers just have to give that child back to God and let God deal with His child. Many a mother has gone to the grave ahead of time worrying about their child. We hold them so close, we feel they are ours, but the truth even the children of your body belong not to you but to God. You say but I had him, I raised him, he is my responsibility, but you’re wrong, everything we have belongs to God. Naked I came into this world and naked I leave, as much as you love these children, we can’t stay here forever, at some point no matter how much you love this child at some point you will have no choice but to leave him in God’s care. God in His Grace and mercy let’s us know we can trust God, we may not know how or when but we can stand on the promise the Lord will make a way some how. Church God always has a ram in the bush, just ask Abraham, won’t God make a way out of no way, fret not about your children, for they truly belong to God. In these changing economic times, with the uncertainty of the elections and who will be in charge, are you fretting about going hungry, running out of money, poverty, homelessness, well God knows about this also. Remember the widow, her son and the prophet Elijah 1 Kings 17:12-14 12 And she said, As the Lord thy God liveth, I have not a cake, but an handful of meal in a barrel, and a little oil in a cruse: and, behold, I am gathering two sticks, that Imay go in and dress it for me and my son, that we may eat it, and die. 13 And Elijah said unto her, Fear not; go and do as thou hast said: but make me thereof a little cake first, and bring it unto me, and after make for thee and for thy son. 14 For thus saith the Lord God of Israel, The barrel of meal shall not waste, neither shall the cruse of oil fail, until the day that the Lord sendeth rain upon the earth. When your earthly supply is almost gone, then you can draw on your heavenly account if you have one, go to Chase to withdraw, but you never put anything in the account, or you never opened the account, there is nothing they can do for you. Worrying about the battle, whatever battle you are preparing to fight, take a page from 2nd Chronicles 20 15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the Lordunto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. 16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of thebrook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. 14 The Lord shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the Lord with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the Lord will be with you. 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the Lord, worshipping the Lord. Worshp not fret brought the victory 2 And when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushments against the children of  Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. 24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much. Somebody outtaa shout Hallelujah if God be for me who can be against me, if God opens a door who can close it, and if God closes a door who can open it? Lastly on this 1st Sunday, let us remember why we are here we are here because of Jesus, because He destroyed that last enemy death, scripture ask the question, o death where is thy sting. As our Pastor is away burying her sister Mary Alice Alexander, we ask that question O death where is they sting, for to be absent from the body is to be at home with God. When you know the one passing from this life to the next, is a believer, then a funeral really is a home going, that person is resting in the arms of Jesus. So whatever the devil and his minions put in your path, remember the battle is not yours, the victory yes, for our God gives us the victory even over death. I tell you what Jesus said 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. Fret not remember Jesus knows all about it.
