Scripture: Hebrews 2: 14-18 Sermon Title: Jesus Knows

This morning our scripture was from Hebrews 2: 14-18 which tells us about our great High Priest Jesus and our sermon is entitled Jesus Knows. I want us to also consider verse 13 of that same scripture 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. God and therefore Jesus knows all about everything we do, or say or think. Does the Bible not say He knows every word before we even speak. This morning we also commemorate Jesus’ time in the wilderness where He spent 40 days and forty days without earthly food, and the Bible says after which He hungered, not He was hungry but He hungered, there is a difference between hungry and hungered. At that time the Satan came to Him to try to tempt Him. When Satan thought Jesus was weak and feeling dejected and deserted this was the perfect time for him to strike. It is the same for you and I, when we are down or desirous of some thing or just worn out from life, then Satan comes to buffet and tempt us when he thinks we are weak and on our own. The Bible says God uses the weak thing of this world to confound the strong. So there is no disgrace at being weak, for when we are weak then He shows Himself to be strong. I want to talk just a moment about our High Priest this Jesus knows all about our sorrows pains and woes. Hebrews 4 14 Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. 15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. 16 Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need. How many prayers do we make to God, how many petitions, explaining to God why we need what we need when we say we need it. I noticed in my own prayers, I spend so much telling Jesus what He already knows, I hurt, I’m tired of hurting, I’m broke, I’m tired of being broke, I can’t walk or run or even move without looking like a cripple or 100 year old. I spend so much time telling Jesus what He already knows. Sometimes we reason within our own mind all the rationales as to why we should get our way and then we go to God sure of the feasibility of our request, surely God will be persuaded. Tell the truth, haven’t you done that I have. That’s not how Jesus approached God. Jesus went to God and said simply in Mark 14 . 36 “Abba,[f] Father,” he said, “everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.” Simple just ask God for what you want acknowledging that God can do anything He wills, so if you have deemed it possible, let this cup pass. We choose to believe this was the only way, but Jesus knows it wasn’t if God willed He could bring this about another way, look at Queen Esther, Mordecai tells her 12 When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, 13 he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. 14 For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. I know my saying this about Jesus maybe upsetting, but if God can do all things, He could have done this anyway He wanted, but leaving that alone, lets move on. Let’s go back to Jesus in the wilderness. One writer said it this way, Jesus made a fool of Satan in the wilderness. Satan could not have fully recognized this Jesus, kinda the way Islam looks at Jesus as just another prophet. Jesus set the devil up. Just watch, Jesus was in the wilderness forty days and forty nights and He was not hungry, you might say how could that be, well, lets look back at scripture people who have been hungry. God sustains Moses and Elias without bread, and Christ himself just now for forty days; he sustained Israel with bread from heaven, angels’ food; Elijah with bread sent miraculously by ravens, and another time with the widow’s meal miraculously multiplied; therefore Christ need not turn stones into bread, but trust God to keep him alive some other way now that he is hungry, as he had done forty days before he hungred. Still He was not hungry, but to show himself as human and to give Satan a chance to get in there and do his worse. Even though the dove had ascended on Jesus announcing He was God’s son, still Satan was so full of himself so assured he would tempt this second Adam, but how wrong he was. Jesus succered the devil, the devil offered to God what he would offer to man, but this was God. Can you see this was a setup, another thing you should glean from this is that Satan does not know everything, just as Jesus overcame the devil so can we. When we are hungry rather for food, money or glory we can still defeat Satan if we remember as Jesus knew, God is greater than Satan, it’s really not even a fair fight, for Satan has no chance of defeating God or the Son of God or His brothers and sisters in Christ. You can set the devil up, when he thinks he has found your weakness, remind him you are a child of the Mist High and God said when He came in the form of Jesus, He came that we might have life and have it more abundantly, so when Satan comes to you wagging something you want in your face, tell him what God has for me is for me, and no devil can say no when God says yes, or when God says not now I know Jesus knows exactly when I will need and what I will need. You see Satan wants you to believe as he wanted Jesus to believe, God has left you out here on your own so if you’re hungry you turn these stones to bread, don’t ask God you do it. Isn’t that what he says to you and I when we are in need, take care of yourself for truly God has forgotten or forsaken you, so take care of yourself. That is why there is such temptation for the poor. Let us learn of Christ here to be at God’s finding, rather than at our own; and not to take any irregular courses for our supply, when our wants are ever so pressing. Jehovah-jireh; some way or other the Lord will provide. It is better to live poorly upon the fruits of God’s goodness, than live plentifully upon the products of our own sin. We are told in Psalm 84 10 Better is one day in your courts than a thousand elsewhere; I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of the wicked. Agur prays against poverty, not because it is an affliction and reproach, but because it is a temptation; lest I be poor, and steal. Those therefore who are reduced to straits, have need to double their guard; it is better to starve to death, than live and thrive by sin. And in great abundance we must not think to live without God, so in our greatest straits we must learn to live upon God; and when the fig-tree does not blossom, and the field yields no meat, when all ordinary means of succour and support are cut off, yet then we must rejoice in the Lord; then we must not think to command what we will, though contrary to his command, but must humbly pray for what he thinks fit to give us, and be thankful.
