Scripture: Phillipians 3: 5-15 Sermon Title: Forgetting All

How our lives would change how our world would change if only we could forget all. Relationships are torn apart, families are torn apart, countries are torn apart and in turn our world is tearing apart because we cannot forget all. Our scripture this morning is authored by Paul to the Philippians 3:5-15 and in these scriptures Paul is lovingly reminding them to have joy even thru suffering, just as he has suffered and indeed is suffering as he is writing to them while in prison. After all is said and done in the end we must forget all that stuff from the past all those things that are a hindrance to the future a drag on today. Paul is telling them look I strove for perfection from when I was circumcised when I was eight days old. That was the law and my family obeyed the law. Philippians 3 5 Circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, an Hebrew of the Hebrews; as touching the law, a Pharisee; 6 Concerning zeal, persecuting the church; touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. In other words I did all I could do to attain righteousness, but I count it all as dung and you all know what dung is. 7 But what things were gain to me, those I counted loss for Christ.8 Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ, 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. I choose to forget it all, all I thought I did that was right, everything I did that was wrong, all I may have done to others and all that may have been done to me. Paul is asking a hard thing of us but it is a righteous thing. All you hold onto that is not Jesus Christ, all that is not of God, all that stuff only hinders you from your righteousness through the blood of Jesus Christ. Paul continues on to remind us why we are willing to forget all to attain this perfect gift this almost unbelievable gift, eternal life, the one perfect gift unattainable by man, though he sell all he has to obtain righteousness without God it was unobtainable. Philippians 3 9 And be found in him, not having mine own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith: 10 That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death. What if we refuse to forget all, even more common what if we can’t forget all. What if the cut is so deep we still bleed. Well Paul gives us the answer just stop thinking about it. Paul doesn’t say forgotten as if it has already happened, no Paul says forgetting, as in the process, for it is a process. I know from experience that it is hard to forget all, hard to make your mind stop, stop the images, stop the words, stop the pain all the pain, but the only way to forget about something is to just stop thinking about it. It sounds simple but it’s not simple, but it’s right, we have to follow the advice in Colossians 3: 1-3 and stop thinking on all except think on this. Verse 1, So if you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth,3 for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Forget all, what can you do to thwart one plan of God, you are no match for God, the famous Itallion words forget about it. All of it. None of it really matters, not if we are truly dead to the things of this world none of it really matters, not if we are truly dead to the things of this world and your life is hidden with Christ, all else all else is sinking sand. My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness. All other ground is sinking sand. Let it go, whatever it is let it go for it all is a hindrance to your salvation. When we cannot let it all go then how can we press on, how can we win the race how can we get the prize, the only thing that really matters above all else is our righteousness above all is your righteousness. . The sin of commission the sin of omission. Just let go of it all and press on toward the mark the High calling of Christ Jesus as Paul tells us Philippians 3 13 Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, 14 I press toward the mark for the prize of the high call. North Korea and South Korea all Koreans but they refuse to forget all. In Africa alone: Egypt, Sudan, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Somalia, Uganda, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Western Sahara, Democratic Republic of Congo and Chad, no one will just let it all go. Most of you probably don’t remember the Hatfield’s and the McCoy’s being raised in Tennessee during the time this generations old feud was in full swing, I remember, this feud had gone on so long no one was really sure what originally happened, all they knew was the last one that drew blood and payback. It’s also reminiscent of the families of Romeo and Juliet. Sometimes we can get so caught up in payback, we don’t even remember what we are getting even for just that we must get even. There is a reason they say revenge is a dish best served cold, is that how you want to eat this atmosphere of cold, alone, no pleasure just the bare necessities, who wants to live like that. Cold and alone, forget it all and press on, forget it all and claim blessings stored up in heaven for me, forget it all and move on move through move pass your pain and move into future. What God has for you it is for you, forget all that is past and grant that we may hereafter serve you in newness of life. In 2016 forget all and press on.
