Scripture: Isaiah 53: 4-8

Sermon Title: Jesus and the Love of God

Our focus this morning is on John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. Martin Luther a German monk called this scripture the mini gospel, and tells us all we need to know, A. T. Robinson calls this scripture the gospel in a nut shell. In our times God seems to be under attack and the gospel is needed more now than ever. Our problems come because we refuse to acknowledge God. 1st John 4: 16 And we have known and believed the love that God hath to us. God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. In verses 9-12 we read, In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.11 Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.12 No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us. The 11th verse reminds us we ought to love one another. We fail to heed this commandment to love as some sort of rebellion against God. There is nothing you or I can do to escape the love of God, there is no beginning or end to His love. Before your parents concieved you you were naught. When we die we will be in heaven, but have you considered where is that heaven? We sing songs about heaven and we know Jesus has gone there to prepare a place for us. I have peace it is calm as a river. This hope and love God has for us. John 3: 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. We have a problem and that is one of belief. In John 17: 5 And now, O Father, glorify thou me with thine own self with the glory which I had with thee before the world was. We read of the great love Jesus has for us and the world in Isaiah 53: 4-8 4 Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.5 But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he openeth not his mouth.8 He was taken from prison and from judgment: and who shall declare his generation? for he was cut off out of the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken. Here Jesus glorifies the Father. How can we reject the love of God? Consider that God had and has such love for us that He gave His only begotten son to die for our sins. The question we need to ask where is our love for God and for His creation. Jesus calls us back to Him saying over and over, God loves you and so dp I. What of the young man that tried to commit suicide by shooting himself in fron of his classmates, did he know the love of God? Or what of the daughter-in-law that killed her in-laws, did she know of the love of God. I have a Savior for you. I am praying for you. Live like we know the peace of God and show the love of God. Let your light so shine where ever we go and show the love of God.
