Scripture: Psalm 51: 1-14
Just saying the word joy causes you to smile. Try it just say the word. Did you feel it? What does the word joy mean? If we go to Baker's Evangelical Dictionary joy-Happiness over an unanticipated or present good. Sounds simple enough. However in the world we live in nothing is simple anymore, but just maybe we can simplify it. Because of all the sorrow and frets and woes not only in our own lives our own families but woe, fear, distress, trouble all over the world. My sermons and indeed most sermons have had to address the corporate sadnesss in the world, but for today I want to just for a few moments forget about all the stresses of this life all the dread and worry and fret and fears I invite you for a few miniutes to cast all your cares and woes on the altar and leave them there and let us think on those things that are lovely.let us think on joy. This week we remembered 9/11 and the 3000 souls that lost their lives and the special I watched was entitled the 120 minutes that changed America forever and it detailed the events that happened on 9/11/01 which brought back all the emotions of the day, amazement, fear, beign horrified as we watched the events of that day unfold. How helpless we felt as a nation and individually as we watched those planes hit the twin towers, into the pentagon and lastly in a field in Shanksville, PA. We were angry we are still angry we wanted revenge some still want revenge even though Bin Laadden and most of the others that organized and perpetrated these haneous acts are dead we still feel it's not enough, even though we bombed Iran Iraq and Afghanastan it's still not enough it will; never be enough for you see revenge anger hatred are all botomless pits from which without God we cannot hope to escape.Philippians 4 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. The Bible say as a man thinketh so he is. So this morning in the midst of your worries and frets and fears and troubles and bills and wants and needs, let us put those things away just for a little while and let us think on joy. Our scripture was from Psalm 51 and in verse 8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice or verse 2 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit. We can choose what we think on we can put away our sadness by thinking on joyous things. No matter how many terrible things may have happened to you there have also been times of joy think on these. The Bible list several things that should give us joy. It may be your marriage( Pr 5:18 ), do you remember the joy of that day, the joy of looking down the aisle and feeling the love swell in your chest as you anticipate the beautifuul life you imagine you will have don't think in today remember the joy of that day, or maybe it was the birth of your children or grasndchildren or even great grand children or spirituallly remember the ( Psalm113:9 ), the gathering of the harvest, the endtime harvest when as believers we shall hear our namees called from the book of life a time when God shall say as in Matt 25 23 His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. The Bible even spaks of the human experience of drinking wine ( Psalm104:15 ) when Jesus turned water into wine it was at a wedding celebration it is alright to have a toast tto have some wine nobody is telling you to be a drunkard but surely if Christ first miracle was turning water into wine at the Cannan wedding and if our Lord said He would not drink henceforth of the fruit of the vine wine until I drink it new with you in my Fathers kingdom it must be alright to have a glass of wine. When your troubles surround you and you feel there is no way out or when youur problems and woes seem larger than life at thoose times think on the great victories God has wrought in your life think on how you felt each and everytime He brought you through and therin find the strength to hold on until your change comes. You will cry sometimes in this life but we must not let anything steal our joy. So tthis morning I just wanted to remind us as we walk in the middle of whatever struggles you may have just take a moment and put those things away and think on all the joy God has stored up for you and learn to walk in joy and not sorrow for we are children of the Most High and to us nothing is impossible so as we wait on God to give us the victory let us remember all the joy Gof has put in your life the devil is a liar you have not always had sorrow and sadness and neither will you always for when this life is over we have a home waiting in the clouds not made by himan hands so we must joy in the Lord as we wait on our change to come.
