Scripture: 1st Samuel 24: 8-20
Title: Resisting Revenge!!!!
The central verse was verse 12 The Lord judge between me and thee, and the Lord avenge me of thee: but mine hand shall not be upon thee. Revenge makes for great stories and great television. I like the crime and punishment shows. It's good to see the Police get the bad guy or girl. The Count of Monte Cristo is a great book about the sweet taste of revenge. A man falsely accused of treason imprisoned for13 years there he plots revenge against those who wronged him, his best friend to get his girl and everyone that helped them, but the problem he lets revenge consuime him and as always when God takes revenge for us His actions are just but just like with the Monte Cristo when we try we fail. Romans 8:5 For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. We must let the Spirirt guide us and not do what we want to do. David was greatly mistreated by King Saul and Saul knew he was wrong. Saul was the first king of Israel but he sinned against God, was disobedient, God rejected Saul and had David annointed instead. When Saul found out he was being replaced by David he sought revenge against David When seeking revenge it can lead to unresolved guilt and irrational actions. 1 John 4 18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. When we retreat into our pain it feeds our need for revenge. Romans 8 8 Those who are in the realm of the flesh cannot please God. David gives us a great example of living by the spirit and not following after the flesh. 1 Samuel 24 starting at verse 1, tells tthe story of David denying his flesh refusing the advice from his friends and states he will not lift his hand against God's annointed. King Saul and his men were chasing after David and his mighty men to kill them. King Saul goes into a cave to rest not knowing David and his men wer also in the same cave. When King Saul came outside the cave David called to him saying, he would not hurt King Saul and to show this David produced a corner cut from te Kings robe, this showed to King Saul that even when the opportunity presented itself and even though King Saul deserved it David refused to hurt God's annointed. I am reminded of prior mistreatment by a bishop, several years of mistreatment because of a lie told him. Years later that same bishop had to turn to the Pastor when she was still Presiding Elder to help when this same lying minister was tearing up one of the disrict churches. Pastor denied her flesh and did not seek revenge against the bishop as he was annointed just as Saul was annointed. When tempted to choose revenge we must instead choose to forgive, just as God forgives us. The cross is the basis for forgiveness. Amazing grace shall always be my song of praise, for it was grace that brought my liberty;I do not know just why He came to love me so,He looked beyond my fault and saw my need. I shall forever lift mine eyes to Calvary,to view the cross where Jesus died for me,how marvelous the grace that caught my falling soul;He looked beyond my fault and saw my need.
