Scripture Psalm 23

Sermon Title In the Valley

When we go through the valley there are some things we should keep in mind. First if you look up while in the valley you may notice there is a mountain on either side. It has been said each of us is either coming down from the mountain on the way down to the valley, we are in the valley or on our way out of the valley heading back up to the mountain top. Both these ideas should give comfort in the valley. It should also be noted that we spend so much time dealing with the valley experience that we should learn how to deal with the valley. In the 23rd Psalm we begin being led by our Shepherd, with the Shepherd we shall not want, we will dwell by the peaceful waters, our souls are restored, we will be led down the path of righteousness for His name sake. Have you ever thought why are there so many things I want even need that I do not have if i shall not want. It was revealed to me that if there is sometthing you want or think you need then get it, but know this there maybe a cost. Then in verse four the tone changes we are no longer led by the Shepherd now we are leading and are in the valley of the shadow of death. The writer notes that even though he is going his own way even then he will fear no evil for he knows God walks with him and even in this the Spirit is right there whispering the right way to go, we are never alone whether in the valley or the mountain top God is there for He is omnicient and therefore He is everywhere and Lord of the valley and the mountain top. Psalm 23 has such a comforting effect we have taught it to children for generations and instead of losing that calming influence as we get older it should increase in importance as we ponder on its meaning as we go through life. Maybe as you think about this Psalm you may have questions, that is ok God may answer you but remember as Job found out when we question God through the dialogue He may question us. We may like Job repent in sackcloth and ashes for asking things too marvelous for uss to know. We can also look to the widow in the valley about to prepare the last meal when Elijah showed up she was obedient and fed the prophet and she and her son ate until the famine ended. We should also look for unexpected treasure in the valley for this womans son died but the prophet prayed and her son was revived. Remembeer there is a lilly in the valley Jesus is in the valley He can give joy, peace and love even in the valley. The writer off the Psalm concludes with surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
